Hailing from Plymouth, The Native are a five-piece band who met while they were still at school. Having played extensively across the UK, building a loyal and passionate fan base, The Native are heading back into the studio to record another body of singles ready to release over the coming months.
Backed by the likes of BBC Introducing with regular radio play, multiple festival slots and opening for Bastille, It’s clear to see why The Native are one of the fastest rising bands to come out of Plymouth. With Charlie Noordewier on Vocals and Rhythm, Ben Andrew on Lead, Tom Booth on Bass, Max Williams on Drums and Harry Youngs on Keys and Synthesisers.
How would you describe your music in three words?
Hard driven tunes
Why did you start making music together?
Charlie and Ben originally started together writing songs at lunchtimes and in their music lessons at school. Shortly after, their best friends Tom and Harry joined forces, taking the band to the next level. Max then joined a few months later as the band won a competition to open up for Bastille at MTV Ocean City Sounds and were lacking a drummer!
What inspires you lately? With the pandemic going on it tends to be hard for some artists and musicians to have a creative outcome.
Although the pandemic has been very tricky for everyone, the lock down was actually a very productive time for us overall. It allowed us to really get our heads down and focus on demoing all of the ideas we had stocked up and explore anything new that inspired us. I think as we all felt a bit trapped and missed normality, it’s likely this theme will show through on a couple of our future tracks.
How does the song writing process work for you?
Most of our songs usually come from a guitar riff or a vocal idea. Once we’ve figured out where we want to take it we then start working on a melody and lyrics. After we’ve got the foundations of the track built up, we then put it into a full band situation and jam it until it feels natural and hopefully what we imagined it to sound like!
What do you think is the most outstanding aspect of your music compared to other young uprising british bands?
This is a tricky one as theirs so many great uprising British bands! I think something that stands out with our music is that we always try and capture the live sound of our music within recordings. There’s nothing worse than hearing an act you really love live and it sounding nothing like the recording! This is something we think is really important and always try to stick to.
Your music influences are (like one Spotify playlist shows) mostly british artists. What do you appreciate about that particular sound of music?
Britain’s produced some of the best musical acts on the planet. Whether its the 60’s or the 90’s, most decades since pop music began have been dominated by British artists. Especially as an Indie band there’s so many other great British acts who we look up to greatly. I think British music has always been very raw and to the point. It’s constantly evolving and changing which always means there’s new and interesting sounds coming out constantly.
The Native
There is a trend of single releases rather than full EPs or albums. Why do you think that’s the case/ or why did you choose the single releases?
Although we don’t have an album planned currently, I’d definitely say that it’s in the works, especially with some of the new tracks we’ve been working on. We’ve got a few more singles to come out which we’re super excited to share, with an EP planned for 2021 at some point!
What do you miss most about playing live?
The atmosphere and hearing the crowd singing our songs back to us. There’s not many things which can beat that!
The band are set to play their rescheduled debut London show on February 17 2021 – already sold out – at The Fiddler in Kilburn.
